An Ode to the Dumpling House
Dumpling House
Just the words invoke immediate memories of soft, thick, chewy dumpling dough with the most flavorful fillings and an amazing dipping sauce. Sadly, the Dumpling House in Albany, NY is no longer with us.
But, those of us who remember it will forever carry the memory of great dumplings.
At any Chinese restaurant which serves them, your typical choices in dumplings are "Pan Fried" or "Steamed" ...if you are lucky, you might have a choice of Pork of Vegetable.
No, oh no...not at the Dumpling House. While you had choices still of Pan Fried (pot stickers) or Steamed, they had six choices of fillings and they were color coded.
Pink - Shrimp
Off-White - Pork
Beige - Chicken
Red - Beef
Purple - Seafood & Cream Cheese
Green - Vegetable
It should go without saying that they had a sampler platter, two of each dumpling variety...and that I always ordered the sampler platter.
While their entrees were excellent, the atmosphere was fun but typical, and they had great Mai Tais....it was the Dumplings, as the name might suggest, that made the Dumpling House special.
Dumpling House, you are gone but not forgotten...I may never have a new memory of a purple crabmeat and cheese stuffed dumpling in a tangy, sweet brown sesame oil and soy sauce based dipping sauce...but I will always have my old memories of them...and they border on perfection.
